Gram, One Eighth, 7g, 28g: Weed Weight Guide

The word gram is common across North America, Europe, and the UK. Even in areas where larger amounts are discussed in ounces, gram remains key for cost comparison.
3.5g
A standard eighth, often said eighth, equals 3.5g. For many smokers, this is a standard purchase size. It is usually enough for about 6–7 joints or approx. 7–10 bowls, depending on how large you roll or pack each one.
Eighths are common in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. In Europe it’s less common. For example, in the coffeeshops of Amsterdam, weed is often sold in round numbers such as 1, 3, or 5 grams not in ounce fractions.
7g
A quarter oz equals 7g. This size balances well between lasting amount and not too large. Usually 12–14 joints, or around 14–25 bowls, depending on style.

14g
A half ounce of weed weighs around 14 grams. This amount suffices to make near 30 joints and make 40–50 bowls. It’s chosen by frequent users who prefer bulk savings.
“Half” is a widely used term across US/CA/AU/NZ/UK. It’s enough for long use, but still personal territory in most areas.
Ounce
A full ounce of cannabis weighs approximately 28 grams. This yields near 60 joints or pack over 100 bowls, based on how you pack.
Ounce is a big buy lasting long time. Ounces are standard in imperial markets. Even in metric countries, ounce slang stays, especially for ounce-pricing.
Pound
A pound is imperial unit, mainly US-based. One pound equals 16 oz. To put that in perspective, it exceeds personal limits 16× a person to carry for personal use at one time.
You may expect that with 28 grams in an ounce and 16 ounces in a pound, you’d get 448g. Instead, a pound is defined as approximately 453 grams. This small discrepancy comes from the fact metric system uses grams, imperial uses oz/lb. They don’t convert perfectly, confusing many beginners.
Joint Weed Amount

So appearances mislead. Small-looking dense buds still hold same weight as a large-looking bag of airy ones. Accurate scale is required to verify your amount.
Slang Names for Amounts
In addition to standard measurements, cannabis slang is broad for cannabis quantities. Terms vary by region, but these are well-known in the English-speaking world.
- Nick bag: Nick = $5 weed, roughly equal to about half a gram. Enough for small spliff when you are short on cash. Mainly US term.
- Dime: A dime costs $10. Amount may vary, but it is typically somewhere between half a gram and a gram. You can make it last longer if you smoke from a pipe instead of rolling. US slang.
- Dub: Dub is $20. Usually around 1.5–2 grams. Some sellers discount, such as a “15-dollar dub”, depending on the relationship and local norms. Common US slang.
- Key kilo: Short for kilo, meaning 1kg cannabis, approx. 2.2 lbs. Not many trade kilos, and key is mainly resold. Common in EU/UK.
- Slice eighth: Means eighth oz. The term “slice” is used in the US and Canada.
- Zip ounce: A slang term for an ounce of weed. Ounce fits Ziploc, giving zip. Maybe from oz. Mainly US.
- Sawbuck slang: Sawbuck is $10, a money-based term similar to a dime. Common US.
- Twenty buy: Means $20 weed. Used US/AU/NZ.
- 50-dollar buy: Costs $50. US/AU/NZ term.
- One stick: Stick = ~1g. Used AU/NZ.
Weed Weight Check Without Devices
Digital scales give best accuracy for weed weight, but they’re not always around, especially when you are out or travelling. If you need rough check, a simple trick works using coins and ruler.
The idea is simple balance. Coin weights are known. 1p coin ~3.56g, US cent ~2.5g, Euro cent ~2.3g. Set coin on ruler weed opposite, and then balancing the ruler on a pivot point, object under ruler, you gauge weight by leveling point.
Not as precise as scale, but gives rough idea if you have ~1g, a few grams, or lower than expected. It is mainly useful as a quick, improvised check when lacking tools.
Price of a Gram Cost?
Weed gram price isn’t fixed. It fluctuates based on many factors, including potency, rarity of the strain, method and location of cultivation, and who you are buying from. Potent strains cost extra than a common, less potent variety. Indoor may cost different from outdoor, and organic status affects price.
Seller relationship matters. Long-time sellers offer deals or small discounts, while strangers charge full. Legal stores show prices, but prices vary by tier.
Law status changes cost. In areas with legal dispensaries, some black market sellers undercut official prices, selling low-cost weed. At the same time, there are black market operators who charge more than legal shops, claiming organic/exclusive. Sometimes true; other times marketing.
